HyperNews: Instructions: Administration of Messages

Administration of Messages

HyperNews may be configured to allow certain users to copy, move, or remove messages. The users permitted to perform these actions may be members-only or admin-only.

These operations are performed using a variant of the normal message outline display. (The way these operations work has changed slightly with version HyperNews 1.9.9.)

First click on the button on the bottom of the page; this will redisplay the outline with a check box next to each message title. Then select the messages you want to operate on. If you want to move or remove a message that has a reply, then you only need to check the parent message's box since all replies are automatically included in the selection. If you select no messages, it will not assume anything - you will have to back up and try again.

Copying: To copy a message, you must specify the "destination" of where the message is to be copied. The destination is given as the path relative to the directory HyperNews discussions are stored. You have to know the name of the destination before you can do a copy. For example, the destination for this forum at http://www.HyperNews.org/HyperNews/get/hypernews/admin.html is "/hypernews/admin.html". The destination must be an existing forum or message on the same site as the messages you are copying. Just type in the name of the destination where it asks for it. Then select "NO" for the delete source option and click on the submit button.

Moving: Moving is a combination of first copying to a destination, and then deleting the source. So, to move a message, you specify a destination as described above by giving a path; the choice to delete the source is selected by default. You only need to click on the submit button. The message should now appear in its new home; in its previous spot there will be a placeholder forwarding any readers to the new location.

Deleting: To delete a message simply click on the submit button without specifying a destination path, and all the selected messages will be deleted. If you are deleting your own message, replies by other people will not be automatically deleted unless the configuration permits that.

Some advice: Deleting and moving messages can take a long time, so it is best to not do very many changes (say no more than 10) in one pass in case there happen to be problems along the way. I also find it a convenience, especially for large forums, to turn on frames and admin mode at the same time since it avoids paging back and forth when displaying each message.
