HyperNews Source
This page is the starting point for all issues of HyperNew source.
There are several related forums that describe requirements for running
HyperNews on your server, installation and configuration of various
features. This page also addresses licensing restrictions for
modification and redistribution, and references the source of HyperNews.
The source itself is available only from this page, but you have to read
to find it.

Licensing and Redistribution
All installations of HyperNews must include a reference to http://www.hypernews.org/ that is
visible to all users of the system. Such reference may appear on the
user instructions, the membership form, the login form, on every forum
page, or in some other prominant place that users will see regularly and
can find if they so desire. Modifications of the HyperNews source code
must not remove the license and copyright notice and the notice of where
to get our free distribution. We depend on this minimal form of free
advertising to continue development of the system.
At this time, you are licensed to copy, install, and use this version of
HyperNews with no financial obligation to HyperNews.org or NCSA. You
may even charge for access to your HyperNews services. Also, no
royalty is due in the following situations:
- Redistribution of an unmodified copy of HyperNews, whether you
charge or not - you would simply be providing a replica of our free
distribution. Thus CD-ROMs may include an unmodified copy of HyperNews.
- Redistribution of a modified version of HyperNews, whether you
charge or not, as long as you have made your modifications available
to us for free to include in our distribution if we choose to do so.
In all cases, if you distribute a copy of HyperNews, you must notify us
or post a public announcement in an appropriate forum telling us
the details of your distribution of HyperNews.
If you are interested in selling your version of HyperNews with
proprietary modifications, then we ask for a royalty. Please ask
us (liberte@hypernews.org) for details.
Installation Services
If you want to install HyperNews for others, feel free to advertise your
service in the messages on this page. Similarly, if you need someone to
install HyperNews for you, or to customize it, you can post requests
here. For my HyperNews installation and customization service, please
write to me (liberte@hypernews.org).
The Source Distribution
Before downloading the source, you should be aware of the
compatibility requirements.
Please subscribe to the history
forum so you
will be notified when new releases occur. (Please do this especially
if you install a beta version.)
The latest version, 1.10, is available here: hypernews.tar.gz.
Previous versions are also available:
The HTML documents, including the installation and user instructions, are
here: hndocs.tar.gz, but
you can just read them online as well by visiting the various HyperNews
forums.
If you are downloading to an MS Windows machine, be sure the ".gz" is
preserved so WinZip knows what to do with the file. (HyperNews doesn't
run on Windows, by the way.)
After downloading the source, you need to read and carefully follow the
installation instructions. The online version might be more up-to-date.
If you find any bugs, please report them to an appropriate page based
on what feature has the bug, if you can figure it out. For example, if
bugs occur during installation, add to the
installation page. Use the bugs
page if nothing else fits. There is a
HyperNews Test page to which you may add miscellaneous tests of our
version for comparison.
If you improve the HyperNews code, by all means let us know so we can
pass your changes on to others. It's better for you also if we
incorporate your changes into the base distribution, so you don't have
to redo your changes each time you install a new release.
We'd like to include a reference to your public forums from the
HyperNews
Home Page or one of its subforums. Referencing all known
installations of HyperNews helps us show how HyperNews is being used
elsewhere, which encourages more use, which encourages more development.
