Why no firsthand historical references to Jesus ?

Sometimes I get worried. Why are there so few historical references to Jesus Christ. Beside the Gospels there are no first hand references about Jesus [correct me if I m wrong]. well, Palestine is a backwater but granted Jesus performed so many miracles for 3 years, made outrageous claims to the Jewish ears shouldn't there be at least some records ? Why the dearth of records ? IS there a similiar lack of records about the colony during this time? If there was records it will make the conversations with all the really smart agnostics much easier. If God want s people to believe in him I wish he would make the evidences more apparent.
Any good books out there [besides Josh MacDowell] I m looking for books on the evidence for Jesus, reliability of the compilation of the Bible, apologetics in general. Thanks
