It seems to me that both house churches and public assemblies were co-existing in the apostles' time. In all the references below, the same Greek word ekklesia is used.
First, from Thayer's Greek Definitions. G1577 Thayer Definition: 1. a gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place, an assembly 1a. an assembly of the people convened at the public place of the council for the purpose of deliberating 1b. the assembly of the Israelites 1c. any gathering or throng of men assembled by chance, tumultuously 1d. in a Christian sense 1d1. an assembly of Christians gathered for worship in a religious meeting 1d2. a company of Christian, or of those who, hoping for eternal salvation through Jesus Christ, observe their own religious rites, hold their own religious meetings, and manage their own affairs, according to regulations prescribed for the body for order’s sake 1d3. those who anywhere, in a city, village, constitute such a company and are united into one body 1d4. the whole body of Christians scattered throughout the earth 1d5. the assembly of faithful Christians already dead and received into heaven Part of Speech: noun feminine A Related Word by Thayer’s/Strong’s Number: from a compound of G1537 and a derivative of G2564 Citing in TDNT: 3:501, 394 Total KJV Occurrences: 116 church, 77 Matt 16:18, Matt 18:17 (2), Acts 2:47, Acts 5:11, Acts 7:38, Acts 8:1, Acts 8:3, Acts 11:22, Acts 11:26, Acts 12:1, Acts 12:5, Acts 13:1, Acts 14:23, Acts 14:27, Acts 15:3-4 (2), Acts 18:22 (2), Acts 20:17, Acts 20:28, Rom 16:1, Rom 16:5, Rom 16:23, 1 Cor 1:2, 1 Cor 4:17, 1 Cor 6:4, 1 Cor 10:32, 1 Cor 11:18, 1 Cor 11:22, 1 Cor 12:28, 1 Cor 14:4-5 (2), 1 Cor 14:12, 1 Cor 14:19, 1 Cor 14:23, 1 Cor 14:28, 1 Cor 14:35, 1 Cor 15:9, 1 Cor 16:19, 2 Cor 1:1, Gal 1:13, Eph 1:22, Eph 3:10, Eph 3:21, Eph 5:23-25 (3), Eph 5:27, Eph 5:29, Eph 5:32, Phil 3:6, Phil 4:15, Col 1:18, Col 1:24, Col 4:15-16 (2), 1 Thess 1:1, 2 Thess 1:1, 1 Tim 3:5, 1 Tim 5:15-16 (2), Philem 1:2, Heb 2:12, Heb 12:23, James 5:14, 1 Pet 5:13, 3 John 1:6, 3 John 1:9-10 (2), Rev 2:1, Rev 2:8, Rev 2:12, Rev 2:18, Rev 3:1, Rev 3:7, Rev 3:14 churches, 36 Acts 9:31, Acts 15:41, Acts 16:5, Rom 16:4, Rom 16:16, 1 Cor 7:17, 1 Cor 11:16, 1 Cor 14:33-34 (2), 1 Cor 16:1, 1 Cor 16:19, 2 Cor 8:1, 2 Cor 8:18-19 (2), 2 Cor 8:23-24 (2), 2 Cor 11:8, 2 Cor 11:28, 2 Cor 12:13, Gal 1:2, Gal 1:22, 1 Thess 2:14, 2 Thess 1:4, Rev 1:4, Rev 1:11, Rev 1:20 (2), Rev 2:7, Rev 2:11, Rev 2:17, Rev 2:23, Rev 2:29, Rev 3:6, Rev 3:13, Rev 3:22, Rev 22:16 assembly, 3 Acts 19:32, Acts 19:39, Acts 19:41 ------------- Some interesting verses Acts 19:32 (NIV) The assembly (ekklesia) was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there. Romans 16:3-5 (NIV) Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus. They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches (ekklesiai) of the Gentiles are grateful to them. Greet also the church (ekklesian - assembly) that meets at their house. 1 Corinthians 16:19 (NIV) The churches (ekklesiai) in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Priscilla greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church (ekklesia (with iota subscript) - meeting) that meets at their house. 2 Corinthians 8:22-23 (NIV) In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you; as for our brothers, they are representatives (apostoloi – messengers or apostles) of the churches (ekklesion) and an honor to Christ.
