Re: Idea A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TYPICAL CATHOLIC

My dear brother in Christ, it is quite obvious that you don’t have a clue of what a day in the life of a Catholic is. It seems you have only a vivid but misguided imagination. I, Peter, will give you the average day in our life.

When I awake in the morning, I praise God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I thank Jesus for another day and pray that I might be guided by the Holy Spirit to do what is right in the sight of God. Last but not least, I put on God’s Armour and arm myself with His Word (Reading daily Scripture). I finish this Morning Prayer with the Our Father, and Praise God again as I did when I awoke.

Then I continue with the normal physical and health needs. Then for Breakfast, I ask that the Lord Bless the food of which I’m about to eat from His bounty.

After breakfast, It is time for work, I kiss my wife and daughter good by as I leave to work, my daughter signs I Love You and blows a kiss, I sign the same and return her blow kiss. As I depart, I ask the Lord to bless me, as driving in Riyadh Saudi Arabia is very stressful. I begin the drive Praising God again, Saying the Nicene Creed, Saying the Our Father, and then I remember the life of Jesus and what he has done for us.

I do this by remembering the Annunciation by Gabriel, Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, the Nativity of Our Lord, Our Lord’s presentation at the Temple, and finally His first recorded Witness to the Power of God at the Temple when he was 12.

Or by remembering His Agony in the Garden as He agonizes over my sins, our sins, the sins of the whole world, His Flogging at the Pillar, His Cruel Crowning with thorns, How he Carried His Cross after being brutalized just hours earlier, and His death on the Cross for my sins so I might know eternal Life through Him.

Or by remembering His Glorious Resurrection, His Glorious Ascension, How He released His Holy Spirit as he Promised us, how in His love for the First Christian, His Mother, he lifted her up to be with Him in Heaven even as we pray that He will lift us up, and How he Crowned her as he will crown us when we are in heaven praising His name forever.

I do this, to remain calm and unworried about the tempest going on around me.

At work as I start my workday, I ask for His guidance as I prepare to teach my students. I pray that the Light of the Holy Spirit shine through me as I teach my adult students.

During their Noon Prayer time, I pray for the Divine Mercy for myself, for them, and for the whole world.

Then, between two and three PM, at the hour of our Dear Lord’s Death, I pray that He forgive me for not representing Him as I should, I thank him for the opportunity to be His Soldier for one more day. I thank Him for dying for me, that I might live.

Also during the day, when I feel tempted, feel Satan’s attacks I again put on God’s Armour and ask Jesus to help me fight off Satan’s attacks.

I return home fairly early because my workday starts at 6:30 AM and I’m finished before 3:00 PM. Again I hit the roads and arm myself with reflections on our Lords Birth, Death or Resurection. When I arrive home, I greet my wife, we discuss our day, watch EWTN and thank Jesus for our marriage of 34 years and wait for our 11 year old daughter to return home from school.

We both greet her, and together praise God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. An after noon snack is then in order which we ask his blessings for.

Then I log on to www.antioch.com.sg to read latest conversations between various factions of the Protestant Christian faith. Then I see attacks on the Catholic faith such as this one I’m responding to. Sometimes I don’t feel too charitable when I see bigotry and prejudice which both are unwarranted. However ignorance is not the fault of the person who exemplifies it. When knowledge is missing only ignorance and imagination can fill the emptiness. Not always do I respond, most often I shake my head and promise myself to Pray that the Holy Spirit might enlighten this person.

Then at our supper meal, some times with friends sometimes just with each other, we again ask God’s blessing on the meal which we are about to receive from his bounty. Here we discuss our day, look for better ways to serve God, and express our love for one another. Sometimes, at his own invitation because of the pressures of the day, Satan tries to disrupt this meal with his own agenda. Together we try to pray for his exclusion from life. As you know, we live in this world so keeping Satan out of our lives is a constant spiritual battle. Interesting how Satan doesn’t bother himself with those who are closer to him than to God, he seems to delight in attacking those who try to Love their God with all their heart and all their soul and all their mind.

As the evening draws to a close, we “tuck our daughter in” with the Lords Prayer, Glory to God, our own petitions.

Then my wife and I go again to the Scripture readings for the day, we review and discuss the message that is included in this scripture in light of the teachings of the Catholic Church. We watch more of EWTN especially enjoying Mother Angelica.

Finally between 9:30PM and 10:30PM, we go to bed and after a few intercessory prayers for our friends and relatives in need of Jesus Grace we go to sleep.

Often, I’m awakened at 3:00 AM to pray for someone in special need. I then usually go back to sleep.

My day is not unlike that of other Catholics here, Singapore, America, or where ever they might be. We all, as do you, I pray, praise our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ daily, in many cases hourly.

This has gotten quite lengthy, so I’ll try to address your ignorance and misconception of the Rosary and the Eucharist in other postings.

Yours In Christ, Peter Smith
