Dear Friend
We do not pretend at all to understand fully all the myteries of God [else we would be Gods!]. That is why theologians speak of not comprehending but merely apprehending Him. God is spirit and has no bodily form but He uses human language to reveal something of Himself to us. Does He have eyes? We are not even to imagine that He has physical characteristics, else that would be idolatry. So also, when it is said that He is grieved or repented or laughed. These convey in part something of His holiness and abhorrence at sin etc. He is immutable, that is, He is not subject to change. If He is subject to change and external factors, He would not be perfect. We change because we are imperfect. The love of God is His goodness exercised towards us. It is not an emotion as we experiece as such. God is ever blessed; there is a divine complacency, blessedness in Him so that He does not need any external factors to make Him any happier. He does indeed take delight in us worshipping and fellowshipping with His, as He desires to communicate with us. What exactly this means we really do not know. But it cannot mean that He becomes happier if we do and less happy if we don't. He cannot change. So also, when we sin, He is grieved but not in the sense that we understand. Surely it does not mean that if we sin more He is grieved more? Would you consider this a change? The personality of God can be seen imperfectly in the personality of men, for we are made in His image. God cannot exist in any other way but as a tri-persoanl. Personality does not exist in isolation. Man 's contact with animals would not bring out his personality, so also God's personality is reflected in an association of equal persons [triune Godhead] in Him. We have not come across a book that deals comprehensively on the impassivity of God; only snippets from books here and there. Hopes this helps. Cordial regards
