TYH: Never trust an anti-Catholic for fair comments about Catholic News Services. Anti-Catholic Mr. Yip: "This episode teaches us to be wary of Roman Catholic history and news reporting. " The truth of the matter is that Catholic News services reported very truthfully, and factually, on this matter. Even the entire speech by the Greek Patriarch can be found in on-line Catholic news.

ME: Ya, quote Rome in support of Rome. What wonderful logic! On the other hand, Protestant apologists have constantly and consistently quoted

1. Official Roman Catholic sources to critique Roman Catholicism. These include Trent, Vatican I and II, papaly encyclicals and bulls. We also quote nihil obstat sources such as the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Baltimore Catechism, John Hardon's Catechism, plus other Roman Catholic historians and theologians such as Yves Congar, Karlfried Froehlich, Johann Joseph Ignaz von Dollinger, William Jurgens, Robert Eno plus Orthodox John Meyendorff. Those who have followed this debate would be by now familiar with these names. In addition we have also quoted the Church Fathers in their context.

2. Official Orthodox sources to critique Roman Catholicism. In the thread on John Paul II's visit to Greece, we have relied on news from the Orthodox church plus statements from the Orthodox Church. We have also used Orthodox theologians to express their views of the oligarchy, of their understanding that it was Peter's confession that was the rock, their rejection of Rome's claim to universal jurisdiction.

3. Official ecumenical documents between Anglicans, Lutherans and Roman Catholics as well as statements from these churches n critique of Dominus Iesus or the ecumenical movement thus far.

Clearly, anti-Protestant Mr Tan's charge is nothing more than blowing smoke.

Of course, we do quote from Protestant sources but we do not do so to validate our points on what OTHERs believe. If we want to state Orthodox doctrine, we quote Orthodox theologians, Roman Cathoolic doctrine, Roman Catholic sources.

Anti-Protestant Mr Tan, on the other hand, like his mentors from Catholic Answers, rely on their own caricatures of Reformed Protestant doctrines of sola fide and sola Scriptura. It would be wonderfully refreshing if anti-Protestant Mr Tan can quote, say, the 39 Articles or Westminster Confession, or Heidelberg Catechism, or any of the Protestant creeds and interact with these quotes to demonstrate to us why we are wrong. THAT will be the day.

TYH: What I have given is from EWTN, which gives only very brief news. EWTN does not even give the full text of Pope John Paul II's speeches -- in most of its reporting about the Pope. So, one cannot expect EWTN to carry the full speech of the Greek Patriarch.

ME: It's ok, I have given the full text from the originating source of that text, ie, the Greek Orthodox Church.

TYH: Even then, EWTN always provides a link to ZENIT, where you can read the entire speech of the Greek Patriarch, ArchBishop Christodoulos.

And EWTN reports fairly enough of the complaints of the Greeks: regarding the sack of Constantinople, the perceived Catholic proselytism, the political issue of Cyprus, etc.

ME: Really? I'll leave the readers to compare the news report from the different sources that have already been provided.

Christopher
