Dear Friend
We will need to define the terms used if there is to be meaningful discussion. What exactly does it mean when we say that God speaks to us or communicates with us? Does this mean IMmediately, that is, without the mediation of the word of God or through circumstances and providence but directly and personally? Or does it mean mediately, through various means? We would have no quarrel if the latter is meant but to say that a person can have a direct encounter with God as did the patriarchs or Paul is a dangerous and heretical claim. When it was recorded in the scriptures that God spoke to his servants, the words were but the very words of God, and hence, final, inerrant and authoritative. Does the person who says that God spoke to him claim that the words likewise were final, inerrant and authoritative? If they are not, what parts are we to believe and what parts to reject? If these contradict scripture, which are we to believe? If they do not, would this be a new revelation and hence denying the sufficiency of scripture? If there are no new revelations, than what precisely is the point of repeating what is already known in scripture? All things necessary to be known and believed concerning salvation and the deep things of God are sufficiently laid out in scripture. There is no need for unbiblical and extrabiblical 'revelations'. We would not touch that book with a pole. Please read chapter 4 'Does God Speak Today Apart from the Bible by R Fowler White in The Coming Evangelical Crisis, John Armstrong [ed], Moody Press.
