Yes, admittedly, 'speaking in tongues' is mentioned along with prophecies, visions. HOWEVER, Nothing is mentioned of 'Holy Laughter', 'Gold fillings in teeth', 'Slain in the spirit', 'Quivering & Shaking', 'Barking like dogs' etc etc.... I could go on and on. Surely, these 'signs and wonders' are dramatic and explicit enough to be considered worthy of mention by the apostolic age authors. It is SIGNIFICANT that no mention was made. Could it be that perhaps it DID NOT occur? Or can we infer anything from the Bible's silence on these 'wonders'. With regards to 'tongues' and 'slaying', let's all do our own study of scriptures in prayer and meditation to determine for ourselves if the current day's exhibition of such 'wonders' is in keeping with the biblical account. These days, it is too easy to twist scriptures to serve any purpose! The individual must search God's truth for himself. For eg, 'new tongues' does not necessarily mean unintelligible gibberish. It could mean a known language previously unspoken by the individual. NOW THAT WOULD BE A REAL MIRACLE. Not the repetitive and practiced sounds produced by today's generation in the guise that it is 'angelic tongue'. It would be too easy to fake it!. And finally, the question of the 'cessation of gifts' remains unanswered. Frank, your replies have not brought us any closer to an understanding. Instead, it has polarised the views even more. |
