Enjoy... But remember
"Don't give in to winning the argument
and losing one of your eternal crowns..."

Hi Seeker, Thought I shall post it in a fresh thread as it is a bit overcrowded below. Maybe we can suggest to Admin that for those threads way down below which have been dormant for a while, he can put it under a sub-forum within this forum (like a link). This will make loading the forum faster and at the same time preserve earlier threads for others to read. Seeker: In a nutshell, I rely heavily on the findings and opinions of the general scientific community. Benjamin: We too rely on the findings and opinions of the general scientific community. The creation magazines and technical journals make a lot of references to these papers. BUT, that does not mean we rely on their conclusions and interpretations of the evidence all of the time. We all have access to the same evidence, but we interpret the evidence using different spectacles. Facts never speak for themselves, they need to be interpreted. Seeker: If they think evolution is true, then it is to me. Benjamin: That’s herd mentality, which is hardly a reliable way to determine ultimate truth. Majority can be wrong you know. There’s no safety in numbers when it comes to issues of eternal significance. Jesus said that the road to destruction is wide and many go into it. Similarly the majority died in the Flood. Seeker: If they can't find evidence for god, then in all probability, I think there is no god (in the physical, empirical sense). Benjamin: Then it seems to me that you have not understood what we are dealing with here. Science does not have a monopoly on truth, and neither is truth to be found in science only. Scientists are human beings and are prone to all the defects that any human being has: bias, prejudice, subjectivity, lack of knowledge etc. Moreover, there is no scientific discipline that is actively looking out for evidence for the existence of God. The driving philosophy behind science is naturalism, and if you know what that means, then you will understand that science is not interested in answering the question of whether God exists. Some scientists may entertain that question in their research, but there is no such empirical tests done to prove God’s existence. Unless you can demonstrate that the general scientific community has devoted themselves to proving God’s existence using the methods of science, you are not justified in saying that there is no empirical evidence for God according to the general scientific community. Unless you are looking for something, you cannot say that it is not found or cannot be found. Seeker: There are scientists who support creationism but I don't consider them representative of the general scientific community. Benjamin: That’s being biased, isn’t it? Seeker: Of course, that leaves the mystical and supernatural which is in the realm of personal faith. It also means bible literalism is out for me. Benjamin: What do you understand by Bible literalism? Seeker: Just a quick one, what do you guys think of mysticism? Benjamin: Mysticism was a reaction against the excessiveness of the Roman Catholic church. In a sense all Christians are mystics as we all seek to experience God in our lives. But as in other areas of life, experiences must always be checked and moderated by truth. Regards, Benjamin |
