Charles Darwin was not an opponent of Christianity. A famous debate in 1861, between Thomas Huxley, another famous biologist, and the then Bishop of Oxford was the main cause of the battles since then. The Bishop suggested it was either Darwin was right or the Genesis account was right. This did upset some christian then but there are other christians to this day who have kept alive the Darwinian controversy insisting the Creation in Genesis must be read literally.

Darwin gradually lost his faith most probably because of the death of his daughter. But in 1872, 13 years after he published the "Origin of Species", he gladly accepted and became a honary member of the Anglican South American Missionary Society.

It was also said that on his death-bed he was seen reading the book of Hebrews and called it the royal book. I don't know whether he was referring to just Hebrews or the whole Bible.

Whatever it is, I think Darwin's spiritual end was at best doubtful because of lack of information and it is rather precarious to stake one's destiny on his theory of evolution.

"Science without religion is lame and religion without science is blind" - Albert Einstein.

Religion and natural science are fighting a joint battle in an incessant never relaxing crusade against scepticism and against dogmatism, against disbelief and against superstition, and the rallying cry in this crusade has always been and always will be: 'On to God'". - Max Planck, winner of the Nobel Prize for his work on the Quantum Theory.
