By having a contrite spirit before God is the most important step to take in imitating Christ. It is this helpless spirit pleading for some sense to be right with God. Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you on the area of compassion - just like Solomon asking for wisdom - you can ask for compassion.
Remember Jesus wants compassion and not sacrifice. By helping people on the outward (but inwardly have no love) is not compassion but sacrifice. In other words, we are trying to subject ourselves to rules and regulations to please God but inwardly we are at odds with what we are doing. Such sacrifice is futile. One very good thing to do each day is to pray and thank for blessings before you retire. As you begin to see the blessings you have over others, compassion will come to you through the Holy Spirit.
