2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 says, "But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethern beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through santification by the Spirit and belief in the truth to which He called you by the gospel for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ". Note carefully : Who did the choosing? It was God who chose. What did He do after choosing? Then He called you by the gospel. For what? For the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. When did He choose? Scripture says "from the beginning". In Apostolic thought it must be the same "in the beginning" found elsewhere in the Bible - Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1. as I shall show below. Ephesians 1:4 says, "just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will." Again who did the choosing? It was the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. verse 1:3. When did He do the choosing? It was before the foundation of the world - i.e. before the "in the beginning" of Genesis 1:1. What else did He do besides choosing? He predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself. Why did He do it? It was according to the good pleasure of His will. If the plain teaching of the Scriptures cannot convince some people it is best, in my opinion, to leave them alone. |
