Bemused,

I don't know if your question was real or rhetorical but it really doesn't matter. I will asume it is real. You posted:

  "I have a question though ... Jesus never made it so tough for the disciples, did He?"

Well, Yes and no. Jesus at times spoke in parables which he then afterwards had to explain to the diciples.

First of all I am not a formally educated Theologian but I do like to ammuse myself at times by engaging in Theological discussions.

I beleive that Theology has some value. But not in the common way that Theology is used. Much of today's theology in many cases is what I call "Pharisitical Theology". This is self promoting Theology who's purpose is to prove or apologize for what the Theologian already believes. Apologetics. The Scriptures are seldom referenced and if they are it is usually out of context. These theologians I liken to the Pharisees of Jesus time. They are more concerned in preserving the traditions and commandments of men than in the truth of GOd's Word.

Now Theology can be used for understanding the Scriptures if an honest approach is used. A part of theology is called Hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is the sience of intrepetation. Specifically theology uses hermeneutics to "interpret" the Scriptures or at lest it should. However hermeneutics unfortunately has evolved as another ruse for many Pharisitical Theologians to continue in their error.

Now we can get to the good part of theology. Some scripture is diffuclt to understand. Not all Scripture is basic truths and easy to understand as you seemed to suggest. Some scripture is in fact very diffucult to understand.

2 Peter (KJV)

    2Pe 3:15 And account [that] the longsuffering of our Lord [is] salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

    2Pe 3:16 As also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as [they do] also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

    2Pe 3:17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know [these things] before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

    2Pe 3:18 But grow in grace, and [in] the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and for ever. Amen.

In verse 16 Peter speaks of things hard to understand for the unlearned. This does not mean uneducated in theology. For the highly educated theologians argue among themselves about what the meaning of these scriptures are.

Honest Hermeneutics can be used to more fully understand these hard scriptures.

Here are some links you can use to that may be helpful.
