Emmanuel,

YOU: Of course I know that Catholic means "Universal" What I am saying is Catholics are christians too, that's all, don't get so worked up, c'mon and relax, man!

ME: Don't worry, I am not given to foul temper. Nothing at all like the manners of "Pissed Off".

Hmm, interesting. If you knew Catholic means "Universal", surely you also knew that the Catholic Church of the early century was not synonymous with the ROMAN Catholic Church, didn't you? If so, aren't you engaging in fallacious equivocation when you said

Flashback: Hey Chris, Give me a minute, is the Christian Church you talked about in the early days the Catholic Church or Eastern Orthodox Church?

"Catholic Church or Eastern Orthodox Church"? The early church was certainly Catholic even before Ignatius called it so. All were invited to salvation. The first 3000 converts were cosmopolitan. Hence the Christian Church is always the Catholic Church except that for the first 100 years, it was simply the Christian Apostolic Church.

You should therefore be asking "ROMAN Catholic Church or Eastern Orthodox Church". I assumed that it was a slipped of keyboard strokes and hence I replied NEITHER. It was the Christian Church.

Your fallacious equivocation is clearly perpetuated in your next reply:

Flashback: Dear Chris, Are you trying to say that Catholics are not christians? We are the early church's christian, ok? And you are a German Monk's reformation church's Christian. The early church that you are specifying is a Catholic church, please go and enrol for a biblical study and exam on the book of Acts, about the early churches at Tung Ling Bible College, thks.

Let me make some corrections to your post and make it more accurate:

Flashback: Dear Chris, Are you trying to say that ROMAN Catholics are not christians? The ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH was there in the beginning, ok? And you are a BIBLICALLY FAITHFUL CHRISTIAN. The early church that you are specifying is a Catholic church TO WHICH THE CHURCH OF ROME ONCE BELONGED, please go and enrol for a biblical study and exam on the book of Acts, about the early churches at Tung Ling Bible College, thks.

It puts everything in perspective when you spend a bit more time on accuracy and precision. What you are saying is that because the Roman Catholic Church has a 2000 year history, hence, Roman Catholics are true Christians whereas Protestants belonged with the Reformation of 1517, so we are at best deutero-Christians. Something like that.

Of course, I'm sure Tung Ling teaches no such thing that a Christian is a Christian if he belongs to the 2000 year old Roman Catholic Church because 1) the bible teaches no such thing, 2) there are other 2000 year old Catholic Churches such as the Eastern Orthodx, the Assyrian Church, etc. It would be a headache choice to choose one 2000 year old church from another.

So, if you are simply asking me if I consider Roman Catholics Christians, I would say only this - Christians, as defined by Jesus and the apostles, are those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God; He was born, lived, and died to redeem us from our sins; that He rose from the dead and is now sitted at the right hand of God, from where He will come again to judge the living and the dead; and that only through His righteousness are we saved; and if you believe all of these, you have passed from death to life. Salvation is by faith alone in these things. Roman Catholics don't qualify as long as they trust in anything more than Christ's imputed righteousness alone for their justification.

YOU: What's wrong taking up courses in the bible college? You and I and everyone who are keen to learn God's word are welcomed! What who bring me there to study, my faith and the Holy Spirit encouraged and prompted me to sit for the exams. Do you want to come along?

ME: Then you are certainly more learned than me. I have no degrees, not even a certificate in theology but I am not one of those who despise such things. As a matter of fact, I YEARN for such degrees, or more correctly, such opportunities to study for one or even more. I wish I have and I hope to find a sponsor someday ;-)) or if I make enough noise, perhaps some seminary will give me an honorary one, eh?

Study hard, Emmanuel, and may you find justification by faith alone someday.

Christopher
