Frank,
Please explain this: "Jesus went to Hell". The Apostles' Creed does not say that hell has two compartments, etc. All it says is that Christ descended into hell. Question is what does this phrase mean? Could it simply mean that Jesus actually died, that He did not faint or swoon but actually died? What is that foundation belief and truth you are stressing, Frank? That Jesus actually died, or that He actually went into the domain of Sheol or Hades? Which is the foundation - that Jesus actually died, or that He went into hell? And if you say that the foundational truth of our salvation is that He went into hell - can you explain why it was important that He MUST have gone into the place where the rich man (the parable of the rich man and Lazarus) was? For me, I have said it before: when Jesus said "It is finished" on the cross just before He died, the work of salvation has already been accomplished. If descending into Hades was a necessary part of securing our salvation, then He should have said those words to Mary Magdalene when He resurrected. Christopher
