Emmanuel,
1. Not all evangelicals are alike. The 18th century writer of "Letter to a Roman Catholic" who would be considered evangelical, was a High Church type of Anglican priest named John Wesley. John Wesley incidentally is the father of the Methodists. No one in their right mind would consider old Wesley someone who will see baptism as a "symbol" only (neither would he consider Eucharist as a mere symbol!). The official position of the Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist churches re baptism is that it is MORE than a symbol. It is an actual means of grace (ie something objective HAPPENS at the font or Table. God actually DOES something to the person at that point of time, sealing him or her/ touching him or her in a special way. It doesnt all depend on the believer's feelings or faith). Most Anglicans, Lutherans and Methodists in Singapore would consider themselves evangelical too.... There have been several bilateral dialogues between the Pontifical Council for Promotion of Christian Unity with these churches....and they have found similarities in many points re the sacramental theology. 2.What you might be referring to is a more conservative group of evangelicals- including the fundamentalists and those from most independent churches who hold a more Zwinglian (Ulrich Zwingli- one of the Reformers, believed that sacraments were more symbols than actual "happenings") position. So dont dump all evangelicals together. Perhaps someone can tell you more about this group of evangelicals......(?) 3. I sense quite a bit of anger in you re Protestants. Am aware that sometimes Prots can be really callous re relating to RCs. (Just as RCs can appear arrogant and insensitive re Prots). Where we have hurt you- I'm sorry. Can you let go of that memory and be a bridgebuilder for the Kingdom? It doesnt mean glossing over differences but it means the willingness to 'lay down' oneself for the other.....like what old Wesley said in his "Letter to a Roman Catholic"....relating to each other in costly love.... Bless you brother. Warmly, THE PILGRIM
