Dear Chris and all, I hope my reply would not complicate the issue, but would provide clarity to answers and questions.
Apostle Creed, unashamely declare, that Jesus descends into Hades or Hell. It is a statement that Christian all over this world affirms with convictions and clarity that this is so.
But Charles Buntin, deny this fact, in his articles, when he said, "Jesus did not go to Hell". Now who has erred in doctrines? I repeat here again. Buntin had erred, proffusely. In English,"Hades"or Hell. It is meant the same thing. You have provided info on this for us. [Greek] Hades is translated Hell .Mt 11; 23. If anybody should read Hades or Hell, it can be assured to mean the same thing. Matt 5; 22 [Greek] Gahanna is also translated Hell. This word Gahanna is understood as the perpetual fires, which were kept to burn the refuse of Jerusalem. Chris: So, Jesus did not descend into hell-Gehenna, but to hell-Hades, according to later versions of the Apostles' Creed. Let's see if we figure out what the Apostles' Creed means by "he descended into Hades". Frank: I agree with your views, above. Chris: So, Frank, in effect, the Apostles' Creed itself cannot tell us what it means by the phrase "he descended into Hades". It could mean as you have said - Jesus went into Hades and depopulated the saved section (Abraham's bosom) BUT it could also simply mean He really died. You cannot simply assume your thesis is what the Apostles' Creed's phrase originally means. Frank: Chris, for one-MINUTE can you read what it says? The Apostle Creed state,” he descended into Hades [Greek] or Hell". Can this phrase that "He descended into Hades/Hell" mean He really died? Definitely NO. Please see this,"IV. Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell: “ It had already declare that Lord Jesus was crucified, dead and buried...so any English reader would not have misread it as meaning Jesus had died. BECAUSE, earlier it had said Jesus was DEAD. He descend into Hades was another statement. Descend, meaning... going down! Since you hold that scriptures as final authority, so when Peter proclaimed on accounts for our Lord," that God would not left His soul in Hades," it re-enforces the points of the Apostle creed as factual accounts”. You may say it look Biblical; but I say,It is Biblical. It is sound doctrines. Chris:” the Apostles' Creed's phrase originally means?" Frank: We knew it meant exactly what it says. Unless you are trying to tell me to read in-between the lines, the motivations on the whys they wrote like that, or perhaps its intentions was just to look good in Biblical connections, or to conform to scriptures views. I think you are little confused here. It boils down on whether would you accept the Apostle Creed's clear statement. There is alot of differance, and Biblical terms, for Christian understanding, about being just dead, or just plain descend into Hell/Hades.I hope you see that too. rdgs.
