Dear Bill, Just as my Girlfriend's church preached the sermon on Roman 13 yesterday, Sunday, I brought forward this message to share. Paul is not talking about submission to civil and general authority, hence every authority, civil, school. church, companies, or even the evil authorities. Governing authorities, so we don't talk about evil authority first. Here is a simple illustration by the priest, Romans 13:1-7: >All authority originated from God. (NIV) V.1 Every leadership granted to a person is a gift and a test from God. To lead people into wrong direction is a fail in the test, abusing the authority, if this gift is not treasured and use appropriately, God will take it back again. >Submission is God's will. (NIV) V.1a We must obey to keep things all in order. We human-beings often have different preferation, thinking and may be opposing one another, if we don't submmit to certain common authority, there shalt be no peace in the nation. The governing authority will be a blessing, but if people don't embrace the harmony and the leaders themselves don't submmit to higher authority, it will only bring upon God's judgement. >Insubordination is God's order. (NIV) V.2 The concept of Authority and obeying it should be in this way, the lower to the middle, the middle to the higher, the higher to the elder, lastly, the elder to the Greatest, which is God in command of every authority. The ones in the lower sector are to be protected by the higher ones and also to respect the higher. >Instituted Authority is for our welfare. (NIV) V.3-4 Civil authority is given by God to maintain peace in nation, similarly, in a church, every pastors and priests, bishops, and deacons are gifts from God to be God's dedicated instruments to teach thru' them and to us His word and His will. >Insubordination incurred God's judgement. (NIV) V.5 If we were told to attend a cell or prayer meeting, rather would I say, encouraged, we will find stupid excuses not to attend extra activities in the Church. We are told to serve the Lord, not only in Evangelism, other ministries like healing, funeral, cleaning, children, etc. In Church, we seek to help and serve, but when given a little bit more, we will squabble and make noises. What ever a Bishop tells his priests to do, like it or not they must follow, unless many find it wrong, then they will appeal. One who defies authority, is asking for God's judgement only. >Respect and honor those in authority. (NIV) v.6-7 In our home, parents and elder brothers are the authority, we respect and honor our parents, we submmit to home authority to seek peace, love and harmony although one's greatest enemies is his own household. In Our church, a church must be in one vision, one mind, one goal. If authority and order is defied and rejected from the priests and ministry leaders, how can the church grow? One who cares only the Evangelisation and forgets to take care and nurture his flocks is a wrong kind of church vision. In Our society, Governments and their authorities like legislation of law, police, tax-paying. Do what ever you are required of, pay whatever tax you are required of, accept any fines and summons if you defied an order of the civil law, for the sake of peace-keeping and maintainence in the nation. God bless you, Emmanuel |
