The Rock / Peter ????

I will agree with what the Bibles says about leadership role of Peter and as doccumneted in the Book of Acts and elsewhere in the Scripture. Peter WAS a leader (amongst others) in the early church. He was an apostle as the Scripture says. A great man. Yes. But, since the scripture says nothing of papacy and popes, to take this one verse and make Peter the first pope based on this and RCC tradition alone is unconvincing.

The Bible gives us a record of Peter's life. Peter was what I call a vassilating diciple. He was hot and cold. He is an example for all of us.

Look at Matthew 7:24 - 27 (KJV)

24. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Here Jesus it teaching the people (the diciples were here too). This is a simile. This parable tells us that a house built upon sand will fall and one built upon a rock will withstand the elements. A foolish man built upon sand. A wise man built upon rock.

In Matthew 16:13 Jesus asks the diciples who they think he is.

13. When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14. And they said, Some [say that thou art] John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16. And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the
living God.
17. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona:
for flesh and blood hath not revealed [it] unto thee, but my Father which is in
heaven.
18. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
20. Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.
21. From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
22. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
23. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

In verse 18, Jesus says " Thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my Church.

Then in verse 22, Peter rebukes Jesus and then Jesus says to Peter, " Get thee behind me, Satan. . . ."

Lets look at Matthew 26:36 - 40

36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou [wilt].
40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

Jesus had told the diciples what was to happen to Him. He had told them of his exceeding sorrow. They knew he was the Christ. He took Peter, and two otheres with him. He asked them to stay with Him while he prayed. . What did they do...... They left and joined the other apostles and went to sleep!

Jesus said unto Peter, " What, could ye not watch with me one hour? "

Later in Matthew 26 we see that Peter denies Jesus three times. "I know him not !
" Yes, Peter denied the Son of God, not once but three times.

Then after Jesus had been crucified and had ascended he appeared to the diciples and spoke to them:

Luke 24:44 - 49

44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Here Jesus tells the Apostles to, " tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high." What did they do? They went fishing !

John 21: 3: " Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing . . . "

So we see that Peter was very human. He did not understand many things. He lacked faith. He rebuked Jesus. He slept when he was to be watching. He denied the Son of God.

Again, Peter was just a man. He waivered. Would God build his Church upon this foundation of sand? No. Not At all. It was built upon the rock [petra] Jesus Christ.

God Bless,

Bill
