This is a good observation. The New Testament cannot really be understood without some understanding of the Old Testament.

Under the Old Testament Law the Levitical priesthood was established. Under the New Testament this Levitical priesthood was fulfilled and Christ was established as our High Priest. Thus fulfilling the Law. This efectivelly ended the Levitical Priesthood establishing Jesus Christ as the mediator between God and man. Eliminating the need for the Levitical priest.

In Mark 15:38. At the moment of Jesus death: (KJV)
  
      "And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the
       top to the bottom."

To understant what this means one must understand the significance of the veil in the OT and what it means that it was "rent from top to bottom"
