The speed and eagerness to accomplish this goal of reaching to the masses needs a rethink. Donald McGavran is the father of the modern church growth movement. Born of missionary parents
and while labouring in the mission fields of India in his youth, McGavran noticed that it was nothing unusual for missions to spent fruitless years (with little or no accomplishment /converts to show).
He later noted the methods that seems to work and discarding those that don't.
Later McGavran founded the Institute of Church Growth which ultimately united with Fuller School of Missions. Peter Wagner is Donald McGavran's best known student. McGavran was quoted as having said "We devise mission methods and policies in the light of what God has blessed - and what He has obviously not blessed. Industry calls this "modifying operation in light of feedback. He further said " We teach men to be ruthless in regard to method. If it does not work to the glory of God and the extension of Christ's church, throw it away and get something which does. ------------------------------------------------------------- Does It then imply that some of us who have been dutifully witnessing and yet have not seen much fruit ; that our work does not have the blessings of God? -------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Wagner claims that the methods he advocates does not allow compromise of doctrine or ethics. But he further said that "we ought to see clearly that the end does justify the means? If the method I am using accomplishes the goal I am aiming at, it is for that reason a good method. If,on the other hand, my method is not accomplishing the goal, how can I be justified in continuing to use it? '------------------------------------------------------------ We can see that the goal is a numerical goal and as commented by John Macarthur (Gimme That Show-Time Religion) has no biblical warrant. What about if the method used which did not accomplish the goal is "the clear preaching of God's Word"? Peter Wagner has much influenced the church here, as can be seen by the current change of direction of some churches here in reaching the masses. I wonder if anyone has views to share...
