A prophet was a man or woman who received messages from God usually in visions and dreams, or as in the case of Abraham and Moses, directly, and delivered that message to the recipients.
The Great Prophet of Deuteronomy 18 and Jeremiah are illustrative of the method God used: "I...put My words in His/your mouth". He equipped them, commanded them, sent them, and they went (Jonah at first peevishly went in the opposite direction!). Peter added that the Holy Spirit moved them to speak. The prophet represented God to man. By contrast the priest represented man to God, and God's king ruled men on God's behalf. Prophecy therefore is the message of God delivered by prophets. Three words are used in Old Testament for prophet-'navi', 'roeh' 'hozeh' - and one word in New Testament 'propetes'. Together they convey the prophet's work as recounting God's past dealings, commenting on contemporary events, warning of calamities to come as a result of evil actions, and predicting future blessings. A large proportion of Old Testament prophecy is taken up with a wonderful Redeemer, Who would be both God and Man, coming first to suffer and die, and later to reign in His millennial Kingdom - the sufferings and the glory - this glory being elaborated by New Testament prophets, i.e. the Lord's apostles. Biblical prophecy has ceased as there is no need for any new revelation from God (1 Cor. 13:8). Rev. 22:18 pronounces a dire consequence upon who would add on to the Bible. ***read my thread on Bill Hamon...
