Hi SK, I believe in the graciousness of God to slowly nudge us to learn the valuable truths of the Word. As John depicts in John 1:1-5; In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. In essence, Christ, our central figure in the entire Bible, is the Word. The Word that speaks life. As recorded in Genesis that God spoke to everything He created. Christ was the one who created all things. Hence, in Genesis, the Holy Trinity had already existed, as it was also written that the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. I doubt we are all here to debate whether or not who the Author is: I tend to believe that Christ is my Author, the Alpha and the Omega while Holy Spirit is my guide, my counsel, to complete the work of Christ in all of us, in order to illuminate Christ's teachings to us. Therefore, to me Holy Spirit is not the Author, Christ is. And I believe that Selwyn Hughes, an evangelical himself, is also emphasising this fact, that both camps need each other to be complete in Christ. The 'head' church needs the 'heart' church, the 'heart' church needs the 'head' church. I realised that some people feel that knowing all those Church History, exegesis, hermeneutics and a whole host of mambo jambo is not important, as the Holy Spirit will guide us. How will the Holy Spirit guide us if we do not understand this so-called mambo jambo, how do we make it applicable? Yet I must say that A.W Tozer, an evangelical himself, is also a firm believer in all those mambo jambo, and because he knows all those mambo jambo, he knows the snares and traps of this so-called mambo jambo when one gets too in-grained in them. Hence, I do agree with you that we need the Holy Spirit to light our path in order to walk towards righteousness. But before Holy Spirit can effectively work out the truth of the Word, we need to be taught the Word in its true essence. What it all means for the people then? How then can we apply it to our current situation? Most pastors, no matter how they look at it, be they a Charismatic or Evangelical, they still go back to the basics. Knowing the context of what this whole topic is all about. We need to know our fundamentals. Otherwise, where would we be if we do not know them? SK, thanks for sharing with us your opinion and insight. Ultimately, the marriage of Christ and the Holy Spirit cannot be separated, SK rest assured we are one on this ground. |
