Hi, Royston:
Here is response to the rest of your querry. You have indeed raised questions that are interesting, but unfortunately I have no safisfactory answers: First, I think I should refine my earlier statement about animism in the church. Perhaps it is more accurate to say that Wagner doesn't really get to influence the church with his brand of theology from the pulpit very much (since he hardly gets to preach at FCBC). However, once in a while I would see church members personalizing evil spirits and giving them names and talking about territories as if they belonged to certain spirits, long before Wagner came onto the scene. But I cannot recall a time when LK encouraged such practices, so I am not sure where these Christians got them from (perhaps from other churches??). Now that LK has publicly associated himself with Wagner, it should be quite easy for the congregation to see now that LK endorses Wagner's theology. We may ask how LK could endorse Wagner's teaching when LK himself does not appear to practice them very much ? This is a very good question, but the answer is short: I don't know. I downloaded Jack Deere's sermon recently and listened to him preach about healing. 'heard him quote Eph 3:20 and James 4:2 to support his claim that the [only] reason we do not get our healing from God is quite simply because we do not ask Him to heal. I do not know how many of us can agree with him, but having listened to LK sermons over the years and trying to understand his theological perspective, I would be very surprised if LK himself would agree with Jack Deere on this matter. In that case, why was Jack Deere allowed to preach in the church? Again, I don't know. Here is another question: Why did LK seek the title of "apostle"? Surely he must know about the controversy surrounding this issue ? Surely he must know that even without this title, he can still perform his functions as a pastor, a Bible teacher, a missionary, a church-planter, a magician, an actor (or whatever), no less effectively than with this title added to his name ? Why then did he drag the entire church into supporting him in a controversy that seem so unnecessary ? Here is another: Just about the time when I was leaving S'pore, there was something new in the worship services. As the offering bags were circulated, church memebers would read from the screen at the front of the sanctuary - words that assured them that as they gave sacrificially, God would bless that with all kinds of temporal and material rewards (job promotion, good career, pay rise, etc, etc, etc, you name it). This novelty smacks of prosperity doctrine. And although I don't know if this is still done today, how it got started in the first place is indeed puzzling because I have never thought LK to be capable of such doctrine. Question marks are all over the place and I'm afraid I can be of no help to your queries, Royston. My apologies. Maybe, we are all just human beings after all - full of blunders. Perhaps Wah Shing might know ?? Cheers SL
