Hi SL, "Thanks for your perspective, Royston. At the time I used to volunteer my services for TCS, I had a couple of friends who were actually full time social workers for an agency funded by some churches. They see community work as a means to gaining converts, and they do believe that when we only provide the services without attempting to win people to Christ, we are not fulfilling the our Christian calling to make disciples of all nations. I guess different people, different organizations, are called to serve God in different ways, hence the need to respect and appreciate the diversity and differences." There are areas like Community Service which do get people wondering whether or not outreach should be the key essence. I would suppose that your friends were not wrong to express that this should not be negated. Yet, I have seen many times over, when this is caused by an intentional move by the organisation, the members within do not operate on the same level, instead of loving these patients, these volunteers' objective is to evangelise, as many of these volunteers have not yet understood what it means to first love these patients. The essence of who God is, is Love. He would rather we show those in need of God's love, then move into the area of outreach. We need to take care of their needs, only when their needs are met, can we think of outreach. Hence, TCS is right in their step, by putting aside the agenda of preaching the Gospel, and instead acting out their faith, which in accordance to some Charismatic circles, is called the Fifth Gospel. (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John being the four other Gospels before the Fifth Gospel) To them, the Fifth Gospel is our very acts of faith and love. So what I suppose TCS is adopting, is the belief that our very acts of love will be the very evangelism tool one needs. Therefore, they are not wrong in doing so, because people do recognise TCS as a Christian-run organisation, is it not? However, my main fear is how within the Christian circle, we tend to disagree on one another's style of worship, style of evangelism, style of preaching, style of teaching, when like you have mentioned earlier, we are all called to different purposes and roles to play in the bigger scheme of things by God. Wah Shing, care to express your opinion? God be with you both, royston |
