Dear Roy, As from my source on Christianity's penetration into Singapore, known as Symquapura, was 1st visited by St Francis Xavier on 24 December 1551, he evangelised thru' Malacca, which eventually came onto Singapore after Raffles' settlement centuries later, other than these he brought forth Christianity to Japan, the East Indies, Eastern Asia. Letters written by him as on 21 and 22 July 1552 in Singapore to Bishop of Goa, Fr John de Albuquerque to invite him to declare the ex-communication Dom Alvaro, letter also stated that he had the neccessary equipment with him and he offered Mass everyday in the little chapel built in olden straw matting in Shangchuan 2 days after his arrival and was located in Huma Igrejasinha, a place in the old Singapura. He was the greatest Evangelist of that century, but he was never given "Apostle" as a title, but canonized as a Saint after the study of his works, life, and compassion in doing Christ's work. If you are to give a Title of Apostle to the 1st church planter in whether East or Southeast Asia, would you recognize St Francis Xavier as one despite its Catholic Christianity, though during the century of reformation by Martin Luther? In His Glory, Emmanuel |
