Hi Wahshing,

You posted the article concerning a report on one of Benny Hinn's healing crusade. The report gave negative reporting of the Minister. I'm not here to defend him but this is a good illsutration of what people will conclude and write about concerning issues can never be settled by those outside of the denomination (much like in the case of the local church that we read a lot about lately.) because they do not have the same theological viewpoints to begin with.

First of all, I like clarify that I'm not here to start another war. But I like to highlight some issues pertaining to the healing ministries that's been around last 2 centuries I think.

1) The Basic foundation that those who believe in divine healing stand on, is that it is provided for in the Atonement of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Below is a long quotation taken from Spiritual Gifts in the Local Church by David Pytches.

"The particular verse that highlights the belief that there is healing in the atonement is Matt 8:17 which is of course based on Is 53:4 : "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases". In Is 53:4ff, the Hebrew words 'choli' and 'makob' are translated 'griefs' and 'sorrows'. Matthew's interpretation of these as 'infirmities' and 'diseases' is simply respect for the actual meaning of the original words. 'Choli' is properly translated 'diseases' or 'sickness' in the majority of instances in the Old Testament. "Makob' can be translated either 'sorrow' or 'pain'. We may not dismiss lightly the question of whether Christ was bearing our sicknesses and sorrows along with all the other effects and judgements of sin on the cross. (My comment : However we look at this, Jesus justified the fulfilment by His healing of all who came to Him when He was on earth, isn't it?)

Certain Old Testament sacrifices (which were all types of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross) focus on the link between the Atonement and healing, eg the sacrifices for the cleansing of infectious skin diseases in Lev 14,15.

The Bronze Serpent in Numbers 21:4-9 is another example. This is taken up by Christ as a type of His Atonement on the Cross. The people were commanded to look to the serpent on the pole, not only for forgiveness, but also for the healing of their plague.

The forgiveness of 'all my sins' and healing of 'all my diseases' are also plainly linked by David in Ps 103:3.

Finally the Name of God Yahweh-Rapha, 'the Lord (who) heals' is one of 7 titles which are compounded with God's convenant name "Yahweh' in the Old Testament. All 7 are promises to God's people as a whole and without discrimination. We cannot limit the extent or validity of one without doing the same for all the others.

There would appear to be enough clear evidence in the Bible for believing that here is healing in the Atonement. We worship Jesus Christ not only because He paid the Price on Calvary for our sins, but also because He carried our sicknesses and our sorrows(doesn't sorrows and either physical or emotional pains often accompany sicknesses, whether to the sick or his/her family? ). We can be physically and spiritually whole.

2) The Epistles and Wholeness

There are a number of statements in the epistles expressing the conviction that mankind had been under the influence of evil forces. Paul spoke of these as dominions, sovereignties, powers, elements, demons, idols, the law, the flesh, sin and death. One of the primary effects of their domination over human beings was sickness. And one of the reasons for the coming of Christ, as Paul clearly revealed, was to rescue men from the domination; to set us free both from evil forces and from the sickness - moral, mental, and physical - that follows in their wake. (1 Cor 15:24; Rom 6:11; 8:38; Gal 4:8,9; Eph 6:12; Col 2:14,15; Heb 2:14,15)

3) Wholeness of the future Age

This is beautfully envisaged in Rev 21:1-4 and Rev 22:1-5. This wholeness of the future age came into the present with Jesus healing every type of disease, affliction or weakness. He healed all those who came to Him. He offered healing (body, spirit, mind and emotions) to those who would receive it. Each miracle or healing was a sign of the presence of the Kingdom which is yet to come in its fulness.

4) Where does this leave the Church today?

I will reply post the remainder tomorrow else this message will get too long.

Blessings to all,
SK
