Dear Emmanuel,
YOU: Healing can take place instanteously, prolong, thru' medical support, or even not healing at all. Not healing at all? ME: Yes but NOT MIRACULOUS HEALING, not the type of healing that we see in the Bible, that we can attribute to God's miraculous (not providential) intervention, that we can attribute to the exercise of a gift. What you are saying is more the healing by the body's own ability. YOU: The purpose of not healing at all, may lead to other good reasons like, causing or impacting others to be saved thru' the suffering of the unhealed or dead. ME: Agreed. This would be referring to prayers for healing. We can pray but it is up to God to heal. This has always been the cessationist's position. No gift of healing is involved. James says to call the elders to pray over the sick, surely not all the elders have the gift of healing. YOU: Some believers without being prayed for were cured of terminal diseases too. Its the excersise of one or more faith in prayers. ME: Perhaps we should always start a healing rally by checking if the required amount of faith is present among the attendees. I mean if no one present at the rally has any faith for healing, might as well all go home and get a good night's rest. That would do a lot for one's health. Furthermore, if we check if the required amount of faith is present and we openly declare so, then we can be more assertive to say that the healing (if it does occur) is effected by our living God. We might even threaten Satan this way, "We are asking for a miraculous cure from our God, Yahweh. Any healing today will be attributed to our God. So, get behind us, Satan and don't try anything funny here." This way, we can be quite sure that any healing is by God. And if healing still does not occur even though someone or some people have openly declared that they have got the required amount of faith, then we can safely say that God has decided not to heal. Wouldn't that be neater and clearer to one and all? Peter Kreeft's "Making Sense of Suffering" is excellent on suffering. I hope you have read it. Christopher
