Dear Royston,
If we go even further back, we can also say no point having any discussion or debate at all since all Christians, even most cults, agree that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. If we use this instead as the baseline, why then do we still discuss about baptism, about the nature of faith, etc? YOU: Helped to clarify some views. In so saying, is it not clear then that all of us who call ourselves Christians, would fall into a Cessationist stand as a baseline or a benchmark, because the Cessationist's stand holds that God is the ultimate healer? ME: Okay if you wish to focus on this. There are also other POA: that God answers prayers for healing, that God sometimes use objects, other times just direct healing, etc. There is a lot of common ground but if you wish to focus only on the common ground and thus call all charismatics basically cessationists, it's fine with me. I doubt, however, the charismatics would be happy. It seems you still haven't grasp the main difference between a GIFT and answer to prayer. YOU: If this being the case, what probably defers for those who are Pentacostals.... I would actually avoid lumping Charismatics along with Pentacostals..... would be their exercising of their faith individually to see a miracle occur in their lifetime. ME: That would be a cessationist's position. ALl of us are to pray for each other's needs, some of which call for a miracle. We are to exercise faith and at the same time, let God decide. That's perfectly fine with cessationism. BUT when someone stands up and declares, "God wants you to be healed, come and receive the healing ..." apparently from this person who possess the "gift" of healing as the apostles did. This means the person KNOWS that God has decided to heal this person and RIGHT NOW, and it is through him/her. These are characteristics of biblical gift of healing. And when that healing fails, and since this person has the gift which cannot fail (the bible never documents any case of such failed healing by those who have the gift), then it must be something wrong with the seeker. Grasp this key difference. YOU: Then, since this being the case, why do we need to argue or debate over this issue of healing.... certainly it goes to show, all of us are in agreement from the viewpoint of the benchmark and baseline. Which to me is the bottomline to our faith. If God wishes to encourage us and to build/increase our faith, by healing someone miraculously, then it is His choice after all, right? So likewise, when viewed from the perspective of God, it is probably God's will to continue healing, but all is in His timing. Is it not? ME: Again, this is what cessationists believe but not charismatics who believe that the gift of healing exists today. Perhaps there are those of you who consider yourself charismatic when in fact you hold to the above which are clearly cessationist's view. I'm glad for you and feel that you should now take that stand. Regards, Christopher
