Hi Chris, Thanks for your swift reply, had been busy with the other threads and needed time to think through this one. Ok, the reason why I might have been either ignorant or confused about this healing aspect, is because I had been given the notion that healing was the issue, amidst the discussion established between frankie and yourself. Thanks for clearing my doubts. Now since it is about the gift of healing, instead of the broader terminology of healing... then it would be even more trying to debate over its existence and probably even its relevance. To say that the gift of healing has ceased to exist or discontinued, would indicate that Holy Spirit would not empower anyone who believes in Christ, for the matter of pointing to unbelievers who God is, through the gift of healing. It also limits God to only work His powers through His believers by using other gifts: gift of prophecy, gift of tongues, gift of tongue interpretation. In debating that the gift of healing was only to verify the authenticity of the roles of the apostles, coming directly from Christ, would also limit the fact that God believes that the following generations do not need such gifts of healing to bring the lost back to Him, on the basis that one generation having proven that Christ is truly our King and Lord and Saviour is enough. We might have to also argue that why did God choose to empower the apostles for the gift of healing? To verify the authenticity of Christ/God? If so, then would it not be important for us to be empowered with this gift from the Holy Spirit as well for our present generation? It would then be unwise of us, as wielders of God's Word, to limit God's decision to use one of us to bring about the gift of healing to others, should we say that gifts of healing has, since the days of the apostles ceased/ discontinued. However, I have no doubt that it is wise also, to scrutinise that very person's gift of healing, to verify whether his gifts indeed are God-given. As well as his whole life should be examined, in order to be accountable to the people of God, as how Paul and the rest of the apostles were accountable to the church. Not just that, but the point of the matter, should not be just on the basis of the patient's lack of faith, for Peter healed the lame in Acts 3:1-11. I fully agree with you on this point of yours that such healings are made successful, because of who we believe in, that is Christ and has nothing to do with our level of faith. Hence, truly, should we possess this gift of healing, just by uttering Christ's name, the person shall be healed, making it clear that it is the belief of our Saviour, Lord and King who saves this person, where our level of faith is not the issue anymore in such rallies. Therefore, correct me if i am wrong here ,I hear your point that you are a believer of a sort of discontinued cessationist's stand, and hence you would take heed that to a certain extent, there is a possibility that one of us might be used by God to exercise such a gift, but this gift of healing is a complete healing, and not a temporal exhilaration of sorts. Am I wrongly interpreting your stand? Oh, point to note, being a Charismatic Methodist, indicates that I am first a Methodist, then a charismatic in all sense of the word. Ü My definition of "charismatic" is probably different from those who call themselves charismatics, and probably they might need to know why they are called charismatics in the first place, which most I believe are not quite sure themselves. Root word is "charis" and root verb of "charis" is "charios" meaning joy, because I know Christ lives in me, I have truly found that joy which is like a fountain that overflows indeed. Ü God be with us, royston |
