Just for the fun of it, the following is an imaginary response from a Frankie-like cessationist.

"There are no teaching in the bible that the sign gifts will continue until Jesus comes again. Jack Deere's arguments in his book, "Surprised by the Power of the Spirit", have been soundly and thoroughly refuted by Thomas Edgar's "Satisfied with the Promise of the Spirit." Jack Deere's book is all about his experience and subjective feelings. Deere's exposition is so groundless and eisegetical that one would be surprised to learn that he was trained in Dallas Theological Seminary. It's not worth the money to read about it. You wonder if Deere knows anything about Church History and what's really going on in the US.

Charismatics keep claiming that they want to be biblical but what happens? They simply swallow everything they see and believe everything they hear. Caught in a psychological entrapment, they dream up reasons for the phenomena they see, "It must be God-given" is their conclusion; "You will believe it when you experience it" is their defense.

Does God promise to heal every sickness of every Christian of every age? The bible does not say this but charismatics make up their own revelations and read into texts divorced from their contexts. They don't exegete Scriptures but eisegete them. Their experience is the canon of their faith, not God's Word. If they have seen it and experienced it, then it must be the truth. They are immune to both human and demonic deception. They are the untouchables.

What are sign gifts for? What does the bible say? To heal people of all ages? Where does the bible say that? If so, why can't Paul heal his companions? Why can't Kuhlman heal some people? If it is God's will to heal everyone, then everyone should be healed. It's as simple as that. Simplest of all simple sense. God is sovereign, I may be weak in faith but can God not help my unbelief?

Read Edgar's entire book to know the extent of the errors of non-cessationism. If charismatics wish to be ignorant and naive and to be led by the nose by all these nonsense, they will simply end up sheep for the slaughter-house. No wonder they are disillusioned and like those on LSD trips, need more and greater dosage of such experiences until they reach a cul-de-sac. By then, they would have lost faith and hope in the living God.

Charismatics continue to put the blame on the seeker's lack of faith for their own failed healings. On one hand, in order not to offend God, they blame the Christian for the lack of faith. On the other hand, if there is any success in the healing, it is used as evidence that the healing was the result of the exercise of the sign gift that the faith-healer supposedly possesses. How convenient but ridiculous! Where does the bible teach such kind of thing? If unbelievers (NB: people who don't even believe in God, let alone have faith for healing) can be healed by the apostles' exercise of the sign gifts, why can't modern-day healers do that? Oh, it's the seeker's lack of faith. Come on, where do you find such a reason in Scriptures?

My advice: no need to go to faith healing rallies or to seek out faith-healers, even in your church. Go to God, ask that His Will be done on earth and in your life, submit to His decision knowing that whether in health or sickness, in wealth or poverty, nothing can separate you from His love. Pray not, "Heal me now - I demand it in the name of Christ!" but "O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done". "

I hope the lesson is not lost in the irony and satire.

Christopher
