Why did Stephen and Philip do miracles?
Acts 8:6,13: Philip performed miracles of healing and casting out demons among the Samaritans, which served to confirm his evangelistic preaching. Like Stephen, Philip’s miracles are called signs and miracles and are of the same order and quality as those of the apostles. The entire city was aware of this. Note that this confirms the initial thrust of the gospel into a new area. Besides the apostles, Stephen and Philip are the only other persons to whom miracles are attributed. In our study of the book of Acts, we have no evidence that the ability to perform miracles was common in the early church. Q: Does this indicate that therefore, healing and miracles were not confined to the apostles after all? Philip and Stephen were deacons and evangelists, does this indicate that deacons and evangelists too were gifted with signs and wonders in order to authenticate their ministries and the word they preached? Do we have a principle here upon which we can formulate a theology for today’s charismatic movement? A: No, the exceptions here do not disprove the general principle that sign gifts were meant for the apostles only. It is in the same way that miracles do not disprove the principles of science – miraculous recovery from cancer does not disprove the scientific diagnosis that cancer is fatal; escape from death without a parachute after falling from an aeroplane airborne does not disprove the effects of gravity. Q: But then why can’t modern-day apostles and prophets also be those exceptions similar to Stephen and Philip? A: Yes they could possibly be, hence, some cessationists believe that indeed God gives sign gifts to some evangelists and missionaries to confirm the initial thrust of the Gospel into a new area. But this is totally different from faith-healing meetings organised for believers! If such signs and wonders are performed for believers, say, in the Indoor Stadium in a Gospel Rally for non-believers (this would have the same results as Dorcas and Eutychus) and are authenticated, then indeed it would prove the non-cesssationist’s case. Furthermore, Stephen and Philip were also eyewitnesses to Christ’s resurrection. Christopher
