The Bible talks about history in a linear way, from beginning to end. One thing always precede another. Therefore knowing the OT is as important as knowing the NT, since the OT provides the basis for the NT. BUT, if one wants to find out more about the church, the logical place to look at is not the OT but the NT. That's the point I want to make. The church is the mystery that is now revealed, Gentiles and Jews as new creation in one Body of Christ. Such a union has been hinted at in various parts of the OT but the idea of the church has not been revealed to the OT writers. So if you want to talk about the church and how it functions, then it is to the NT one looks to. If you appeal to the OT for church practices, the danger is that you mix the new covenant with the old covenant, which Christ has fulfilled and done away with, replacing it with a better one. It should not be so, those who are under the new covenant should also live by it, and church practices should be informed by it and guided by it as well. |
