JOE: When Jesus did house cleaning at the temple of the Jews, They demanded of him and asked, "What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?" Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days." The Jews replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?" If you were one of them you would have interpreted it literally then. LBS: Joe, you quoted Jn 2:19-20 but not the following 2 verses which say: 21 But he spake of the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said. You are wrong on 2 counts in trying to use Jn 2:19-20 to cast a slight on Grace_Messenger's "literal interpretation". Firstly, I believe Grace_Messenger would understand literally from verse 21 ( which you didn't quote) that Jesus was referring to his death and resurrection when He spoke about destroying this temple and raising it up in 3 days. Believe what God says as revealed in verse 21 literally and we need not continue to speculate further what Jesus meant when He spoke to the Jews. Joe, you have mis-used God’s Word in Jn 2 in admonishing Grace_Messenger for his “naďve” emphasis on literal interpretation. You probably didn’t read carefully what Grace_Messenger says about literal interpretation: The Word of God is complete and it is our duty to try and carefully understand Scripture using Scripture in context and leave nothing to our vain imaginations. Secondly, you were actually right to say that Grace_Messenger, if he were among the Jews, would likely have taken Jesus’ words literally and be as confused as the Jews themselves. But not only Grace_Messenger but if you and I were there among the Jews, we would likewise have taken Jesus’ words literally, and would have no idea that Jesus was talking about his death and resurrection then. Verse 22 (quoted above) tells us that even the disciples themselves understood what Jesus meant only, yes only, after “he was risen from the dead”; they didn’t understand what Jesus actually meant then. They even went about preaching the gospel of the kingdom without knowing that Jesus would die on the cross and be raised up again. You are incorrect again on this count in using Jn 2:19-20 to cast reflections on the way Grace_Messenger goes about understanding the Scriptures. We can be very careless in the way we read the Word of God – let’s be careful. “…..for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” Ps 138:2 |
