Mtt 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

… ye therefore shall see …
* tells us that it can’t take place before 32 A.D. (the year Christ spoke these words); this rules out anything to do with the Syrian King Antiochus Epiphanes of 167 BC
* it will have to be sometime in the future of Christ speaking but I will show below that it has nothing to do with the 70 AD event

… (whoso readeth,let him understand) …
* You can understand what the abomination of desolation is and when it is going to take place
* It was "spoken of by Daniel the prophet"; so go to the book of Daniel to understand what it means

Dan 9:27
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Dan 11:31
And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate

Where is the "sacrifice and oblation"/"daily sacrifice" taking place?
At the sanctuary in Jerusalem – Dan 9:25-26

What will it be replaced by?
"the abomination that maketh desolate" – this is the worship of the Anti-Christ; it will be an idolatorous worship filled with all kinds of abominations (things that are hateful to God); with this "overspreading of abominations" the Anti-Christ will make the sanctuary of God desolate

Dan 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

This is the Anti-Christ mentioned in Rev 13.

Look up "abominations" in your Concordance to see how it is associated with idolatorous worship contrary to God. Example:

Ezekiel 5:11 Wherefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD; Surely, because thou hast defiled my sanctuary with all thy detestable things, and with all thine abominations, ...

When will this take place?
"in the midst of the week" Dan 9:27 i.e. in the middle of the 7 year Great Tribulation period

So it has nothing to do with the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD

To understand prophecy, use the Word of God , I don’t believe there is a need to know a lot about history. The Word of God is complete and sufficient.
