Dear LBS,
Hi, I did a little research back in the Book of Daniel in the OT relevant to this Matthew's message. Its Daniel 9:20-27.
St Gabriel the Archangel, which appeared earlier on in Daniel's vision, explained to Daniel more clearly about the prophecy regarding God's plan in rededicating of the Jerusalem Temple, and it will stand for seven times sixty-two years which is a time of troubles after the rebuilding period of seven times seven years where God sent a man to rebuild the holy city. I feel that the man is Jesus himself.
Note verse 26, God prepared an Army of a powerful ruler to invade the city and the temple, which I believed is the Moslem nations conquering, eg Palestinians and Turkhs. War and destruction will come like a flood prepared by God too in the end. The leader killed unjustly was Jesus himself too.
Note verse 27, but this new ruler whom exactly figure him out, will put an end to the sacrifices and offering. But the Awful horror will end when the ruler came to an end to his reign.

Well, this is to my best knowledge upon this important prophecy which indeed we are very close to in this world. I refered to the OT to know NT meanings always, hope this application can solve your doubts, and thanks, you allowed me to gain extra knowledge again!

Shalom,

Emmanuel
