My Dear Friend,

I do not think you could possibly offend me! > Ha Ha. LOL, I have a acquired a deep affection for you over the past 7-8 months. We have prayed together my friend. I am not so sensitive as many others. I think those who get so easily offended are possibly not as rooted in Christ as they let on.

When ES started this thread he asked a question about the doctrine of devils "according to the Word." Meaning, by using the scriptures only, define "doctrines of devils".

The point being, that organized religion, or individuals, may probably have a different definition than what we would get from using scripture only. I did not take it as directed as specifically or exclusively directed at the RCC.

1 Tim 4:1:3 (KJV)

      1. Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the
      latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving
      heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

      2. Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their
      conscience seared with a hot iron;

      3. Forbidding to marry, [and commanding] to abstain
      from meats, which God hath created to be received with
      thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

So, if I use this scripture only I would come up with two things that could be considered "doctrines of devils."

  1. Forbiding to marry 2. abstaining from meats.

But I would submit to you that this is far from comprehensive in covering this topic. This verse is but one of many that may apply and enlighten us to "doctrines of devils". Or the effect that they have which more important than the definition alone.

To look further we search the scriptures. Key words are doctrine, devil, seduce, "depart from faith" etc.

In verse 1 above. They *departed from the faith*, by giving heed to "seducing spirits" and "doctrines of devils".

The departing from the faith (sound doctrine) is apsotasy. The "latter times" here refers to the period beginning with Christ. It cannot mean a period of time that has just begun, because Paul is writing to Timothy in the early church.

Men must have their consciences seared, before they can depart from the faith, an lead other with them. It is a sign of apostasy when they will command things which God has forbidden, and forbid what God has allowed, like marriage(Gnosticism/Spiritualism) and meats (OT legalism). Meats and marriage are but two examples.

We can see throughout the NT, examples where men have departed from the faith and attempted to teach that which is contrary to the Gospel of Christ and of the apostles. They teach doctrines that cause apostasy, making Christ of none effect. These are all the "doctrines of devils."

What is happening in Christianity many times is that the term "devil" is attributed by a person or Church to anyone with whom they disagree or disagrees with them. One group call the other "devils" or "devilish."

It is the teaching(doctrine) that we must consider. Is it contrary to the Gospel of Christ? It is Judaizing or Gnostic? Does it negate the finished work of Christ?

So Emmanuel, tell me what you know about the "doctrines of devils". But I will not limit you to Sola Scriptura. However some contextual scripture would be nice. :)

God Bless,

Bill
