Greetings in our Lord,
in Hebrews chapter 5 verse 13, we are told that "anyone who...(is) still AN INFANT, IS NOT ACQUAINTED WITH THE TEACHING ABOUT RIGHTEOUSNESS."...we are taught to "therefore, let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgement. (Hebrews 6:1-2). seems quite clear to me that God is telling us that teachings concerning repentance from acts, of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and judgement are "elementary". and for us to go on to maturity, we should be "acquainted with the teaching about righteousness" (v13b). many a times we lament the "unbalanced views" and "childishness" of believers (including ourselves). i've seen this happen so many times in this forum. often times, we pray for revival and maturity of the church. could it be that we christians, and the church in general have been focusing too much on the elementary teachings at the expense of the truly important teaching about rigteouness? what is the teaching of righteousness? while thinking about this, i was prompted to read the book of Romans, and the following verses caught my attention: "Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the RIGHTEOUNESS that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's RIGHTEOUSNESS. Christ is the end of the law so that there may be RIGHTEOUSNESS for everyone who believes" (Romans 10:1-4). "There is now NO CONDEMNATION for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For while the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature. God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the RIGHTEOUS requirements of the law might be fully met in us" (Romans 8:1-4) "For if by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of GRACE and of the GIFT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS reign in life through one man, Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:17). i believe we should encourage one another not to make the same mistakes as the israelites who "are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge", and who "did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own" who "did not submit to God's righteousness (by grace)", and who are not spiritually knowledgeable and matured in the Truth that "Christ is the end of the law so that there may be RIGHTEOUSNESS for everyone who believes". let us constantly remind one another that we have the righteouness of Christ. and as such, we are beloved children of God. hold on to the truth, and see our Father's heart (instead of merely His hands - a tragic mistake the israelites made). even as we practise discipline in our bible reading and personal devotion, let us not have "zeal that is not based on knowledge" like the israelites. let us focus on Christ, our righteousness. i'm sure, by His grace, we won't end up like the wandering and wondering israelites in the wilderness. Be blessed and be a blessing :) Keith “He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption”; (1 Cor 1:3) “he saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5) “So also David pronounces a blessing upon the man to whom God reckons righteousness apart from works” (Rom 4:6) “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” “For him [Jesus Christ] who had no knowledge of sin God made to be sin for us; so that we might become the righteousness of God in him” (2 Cor 5:2) “As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever."” (2 Cor 9:9)
