Who is the one who doesn't abide in Christ? The one who isn't bearing fruit (see v 5). So isn't 'take away' having the meaning of 'throw away' according to the texts? Good questions indeed. Now to address your second portion. I am glad you quoted in NASB, as I like NASB's translations most. John 15:2 "Every branch IN ME that does not bear fruit, He takes away" John 15:6:"If ANYONE does not ABIDE IN ME, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them , and cast them into the fire and they are burned" Emphasis in BOLD is on purpose. So important words are IN ME. The key to understand John 15:2 is that these branches are abiding in Christ, as they are branches in HIM. Therefore, contextually, it is certainly discipline. However, John 15:6 are branches that are not abiding IN HIM, or another way to put it, was never a part of Christ in the first place. John 15:2 is clearly for Christians while John 15:6 are for those who are not for Christ. Hope this helps. royston |
