Sorry SBG to address your queries in three separate parts, as your simple question is actually 3 portions, and have all been addressed in Bruce Wilkinson's book why lift up is discipline while pruning is dealing with another aspect of our Christian walk. Excerpt taken from his book; pg 63,"Let's be honest-pruning is cutting and cutting hurts. Sounds a lot like being disciplines, doesn't it? No wonder most Christians have trouble distinguishing between discipline and pruning in their lives. It all feels the same. But it isn't." Bruce went on to highlight there are some questions we should ask God when such moments of struggle or pain appears in our lives. Below's excerpts is extracted from pg 67 of Bruce's Question Table, as this screen does not allow Table Format, I have classified each question and its response according to this order: Question DISCIPLING PRUNING Why is it happening? I am doing something wrong or I am doing something right, but still got this pain... What is your level of fruitfulness? No fruits or some fruits. What is the Vinedresser's desire? some fruits or more fruits. What needs to go? Sin or Self. How should I feel? Guilty, sad or Relief, trust What is the right response? Repentance(stopping our sinning) or Release (giving God our permission to mould us to be more Christ-like: For Christ to increase, while we decrease) Hence, we can see that pruning is about us being shaped more like Christ, by denying ourselves. Discipline is about sin that is existing in us, which we are to repent from. Hope this helps to address the difference between pruning and discipline. royston |
