Thanks Royston for giving us the insights on Bruce's explanations about the difference between pruning and disciplining, which is a very good teaching.
But is Bruce differentiating 'take away' in Jhn 15:2 from 'pruning' in the same verse? I guess he also might have use 'lift up' as it has that meaning too in the Greek original as brought up by you. But still i think the context in chp 15 does give the possibility that 'lift up' may not the intended meaning here for v 2's 'takes away'. Else it will read like Jesus forcing the words in v 6 to mean a totally different scenario. If He had meant 'lift up' the unfruitful branch, why would He warn about not abiding in Him else face being thrown away? Moreover, Jesus is using the illustration in chp 15 that He is the Vine and so all branches are in Him...ie all branches are christians. Non-christians are never in Christ unless they become christians or should i use the word, saved believers.
