"Modern chrisianity is a term I use but it is quite difficult define it. Other people have used terms like Today's Gospel, etc. Generally what we mean are those brands of the Gospel which doesn't seem to work and which makes the last state of a man worse than his first, sometimes even worse than a non-christian. For example, in the old days they used to preach that when you believe in Christ you will have joy and peace. I think such messages are no longer preached because the modern Gospel can no longer give a person such joy and peace. What it can produce is guilt and confusion as some of the contributions in this Forum have shown." Hi Interested, Got something to share with you, I am afraid that many Methodists are drifting towards Modern Christianity, once you have explained it this way. Many are actually not sure of their salvation. Many have not understood that the portion James talks about regarding works, is about works springing out from joy and knowledge that Christ has redeemed us from the cluthes of sin, and by faith, our works will be displayed. This is so, because of our current Sunday School system, which is fielded by Sunday teachers, who are serving God without first grasping the concept themselves. I do wonder whether some of them have the gift of teaching. Not many Methodists are having the same opinion as me in the stand of my salvation being secured in Christ. They think that they need to work out their salvation. While I come from the stand of working out my faith. How true about this issue of joy and peace. It was certainly a first response to the Early Christians when they heard the Good News. The first fruits of the Spirit: Love, Joy and Peace. Even our forefathers sang with so much gusto to the lyrics of the hymns and with full assurance of their salvation. Thanks for your sharing, it has helped me see clearly what are the things that needs to be settled first. God bless, royston |
