So how was it ? With all the fanfare .. I mean how did it go..
I missed the show.. but have read promotional articles about the event.
With all the christian opposition about our young reading into Harry Potters ... ( some food for thought ?)
quote : Meet Singapore's own David Copperfield. Lawrence Khong, 49, has the showmanship, the magnetic charisma, and the gift of the gab. In fact you'd be hard pressed to believe that he isn't a professional magician, a shrewd businessman, or even a politician. The last thing you'd expect him to be is a pastor. His passion and excitement for his magic and his vocation are impossible to miss. And he is probably the only pastor in Singapore who is both man of God and worldly entertainer at the same time. Explains Lawrence, who bought his first magic trick when he was 13,"I like to use my sleight of hand as a means to share values. Some people might say " Well, this black handkerchief represents sin and if you believe in God, clap! It becomes white". I've discovered if I do tricks like that, instead of thinking about what I said, people will be thinking 'how did that black handkerchief turn to white'. To me, it's a distraction from a very important point you want to make. "What I do is a very good show just to and gain the respect of your audience. And then I talk to them and say things like ' you know sometimes there are things you think are real but actually they are just illusion.' I use it as a bridge to gain audience attention and use that to challenge them to think about things. Magic has a way of challenging your presuppositions, and opening your mind." While it is difficult to imagine the two going hand in hand, Lawrence adds: "I'm just a communicator, just that I'm using a few more tools. A good communicator is a storyteller. I am telling a story." His latest story, Magic of Love is a huge, $1.5 million production that incorporates a unique lend of magic, music, song and dance into one jumbo evening for all the family. Set in 1930's Shanghai, it is a simple tale of a father and his daughter, and their changing relationship as a result of trials and tribulations as the father strives to become the best magician in town. "I feel the problem of young people today is really a reflection of family problems. So I thought, is it possible to do a magic show where the first scene shows the close relationship, and then in the middle I start to pursue excellence and start to neglect the relationship, only to have it end happy," explained Lawrence. Apart from the fact that this is the first magic show cum musical since magician Doug Henning tried it some 20 years ago, the musical is also a biography of sorts for Lawrence, who plays the title role of the Father, and his real-life 20-year-old daughter, Priscilla, who plays the role of the Daughter. Priscilla revealed, "Basically the story of Magic of Love is the story of us, our life story. It has been a journey. What is portrayed is something that is ongoing. Imagine having to see your own parent 24 hours a day, seven days a week." Added Lawrence, "When we started we had a lot of fights, and got on each other nerves. Working together, we went through some rough points where she didn't feel comfortable with me but in the process of these eight months we are learning to respect each other. I find she starts to relate to me more as a father when I start to give her respect." The production boasts roughly 18 major magic tricks, each one unique and custom-made in Las Vegas by illusion designers like bill Smith and Jeff McBride, who have designed magic sets for the likes of David Copperfield and Lance Burton. At present, the illusions alone cost a whopping $500,000. So what can the audience expect from this 90-minute magic, musical extravaganza? Says Lawrence, "First, expect a good world-class illusion show. They are going to see something very unique in the combination of magic, music and drama and are going to walk away touched by the simplicity and yet, the power of the story." Chips in Priscilla, "And I think they'll get their money's worth!"
Magic of Love will be performed on Sep 29 (Sat) at the Singapore Indoor Stadium at 8pm. Tickets are priced at $19, $29, $39 and are available from Sistic. unquote source :www.getasia.com.sg
