Apologies if my reply seems blant. What I wanted to ask is your friend's definitation of love, just like Royston explained. God is Spirit. We could not see, hear or touch Him physically. In order to know Him, you have to connect with Him in the spirit. Love is the first amongst the nine characters of the fruit of the Spirit. In order to begin knowing God, you must first love something about Him; or else how to get yourself interested? If your friend is coming from the point of merely studying the religion but not involve in any relationship, then that is another different matter.
