Thanks Bill and Eveline for your helpful thoughts. If I may put all you’ve said together: Heretics are people/groups who wilfully teach contrary to Scriptures, specifically in non-negotiable areas. On reflection, I think I have trouble with non-negotiable vs negotiable. You say there are probably few things in the Bible that you would consider non-negotiable. That would mean most of Scriptures are negotiable and only a few things that God says are non-negotiable. Doesn’t sound right to me. I think all of Scriptures is non-negotiable, because what God says must be so, no 2 ways about it. If this is the case, then you have to say that a heretic is anyone who wilfully teaches any doctrine contrary to Scriptures. Make sense? |
