Hi Bill, You wrote :” Scripture is neogotiable only in the sense of it's interpretation. There are no originals left. Only extants. Many are not versed in Greek or Aramaic. So what we say is "scripture" today is at best a copy. Most extants are probably copies of copies. So what most people refer to as scripture, is the King James or other translation. Much meaning can be lost in translating from one language to another. “ Your implication is that because there are no original manuscripts, people therefore come up with different interpretations of the Bible? It means God in His sovereignty didn’t make an effort to preserve the original manuscripts for us, therefore we are not to be blamed? This is a serious charge on God, you know? So I can’t disagree with you more when you say: “So what we say is "scripture" today is at best a copy” and the insinuations it carries. Jesus Christ used copies, not the original manuscripts and He called them Scriptures, and He didn’t complain about not having the original manuscripts. Also 2Tim3:16 can’t be empty talk from God – if want to know doctrine, reproof or correct any errors, where do you turn to? In fact, the Bible actually tells us that God promised He will preserve His Word so that we can know exactly what He wants us to know, in the most minute details even, not just generally. Know what will happen when the original manuscripts are still around? – the Bible tells us that people will worship them. God knows better than to keep them around on the earth. You wrote: “Two equally bright and God-fearing Christians can get a different meaning from the same "scripture." Does this make one a heretic? or possibly both? (both could be wrong). No one, or no group has a such a corner on the truth or such authority as to declare what the meaning of scripture to the end that any who disagree are heretics. So when you say "scripture" is non-negotiable, what do you mean? Your understanding of it, or possibly something else. “ Bill, rest assured I am not about to go around calling people heretics; I am not trying to get a mandate from you people to go around doing that. But responding to your points above: God says what He means – there is only one intended meaning, hence non-negotiable, can’t be two or more different meanings acceptable. If people churn out several meanings where only one is intended, then something is seriously wrong. We can’t say that this is because God wanted diversity within the Body of Christ. Also we can’t blame it on God and say that He didn’t provide us with the original manuscripts. The only reason I can think of is that there is something seriously wrong with our handling of God’s Word. |
