I guess you could do it that way. I never thought of it like that. Never heard any preacher say that too....
Anyway, We ARE in Christ and ONLY He perfectly fulfilled the LAW for us. Agree in all others.
I do not pull out verses from here and thier and apply to me directly. I think we cannot do that. I do read the whole chapter or the theme involved and try to extract the principle from there. ( except for direct promises from God where He directly talked to the NEW believer in the New covenant ). So for exmaple, the deut 8:18,19 both will not directly apply to us. However the principle will apply, because GOD hasn't changed. Jesus achieved it for us. You see, it is Jesus who fulfilled the law for us.
In Romans, for exmaple, ch 8, v28, we read that "ALL" things will work out for the good of those who Love God and are called acoording to His purposes. This I believe can be directly applied to us if we are called according to His purposes ( Everyone should be convinced of that first ).
Hope it is a bit clear ?
If not, maybe correct my wrong thinking ?
