here's a bit of a disclaimer - what follows is written with a tongue in cheek :
God created light first because God knew that light from the Sun he will create later will take millions of years before it reaches Earth and so did a substitute for it before humankind appears. The serious part now. The text of Genesis 1:1 - 2a is a Creation Hymn created by the editors of 'P'. What the authors did was to collate all the original creation stories and compress them into actions that took place over six 24hours days - their purpose was to 'teach the divine approval of Israel's traditional six days work week'(Maly 1968). The only chief distinguishing element of each day, of course is the passing of night into light (day), a theme that is constantly repeated as a refrain in the hymn 'there was evening, there was morning, the x day'. Therefore it is logical, as that the narrative of dividing light from darkness, should, in a text that seeks to explain the working days and the Sabbath rest, come first and set the basis of the creation work-days.
