It is very important for christians to distiguish between psychology and true christianity and to quickly spot preachers who use psychological techniques in the church. One has to be mentally alert these days and pay attention to the content of the sermon and the behaviour of the preacher to spot the "psychological" preacher. Now, there is nothing wrong with psychology, as a scientific subject and it is useful for solving problems in one's life. But is not a substitute for the gospel of grace and redemption from sin which only the Bible offers. The prosperity gospel is a load of rubbish, as far as I am concerned. There are tons of self-help books in the market and I think quite a lot of people are making good money by teaching other people how to become rich. But most people who read these books will find that they are not much better off after reading these books. So all of us should be alert to the use of psychological techniques in the church. But if one does have psychological problems one should read proper books on psychology, which are based on well designed scientific research, or see a professional psychologist. A preacher's jop is to preach Christ and the gospel of grace and redemption - i.e. the Old Gospel. I am highly suspicious of any preacher who tries to do anything more than preaching the Old Gospel. |
